Reconstructed historic surveys — Galveston, Texas

Downtown Galveston, building by building, as it was.

Two large-format maps of the city — 1899, the year before the Great Storm, and 1912, the city raised and rebuilt — pieced back together from the original archive sheets, wear and all.

The maps

Two surveys, thirteen years apart.

The story

It started as dozens of loose sheets in an archive.

I'm not an artist, and I'm not much of a businessman. I live in Galveston, I fell in love with what used to stand in these buildings, and I spent two years of evenings after work lining up hand-drawn survey sheets until the whole downtown came back together as one picture. Nothing redrawn, nothing "restored" — the pencil marks and foxing are the real map.
